What sort of business are you? If it’s your own enterprise, are you a sole trader or a limited (Ltd) company? The type of company you choose to be affects...
How human is your accountant, or rather, how human should your accountant be? Yes, of course accountancy services are all about figures, and accuracy, but there’s something else a business and accountancy service should be offering you: trust.
Where does this trust come from? Obviously, a big part of it is being professionally on the ball, knowing our stuff inside out, and working on our clients’ behalf to get the best for them. But trust also comes from being able to connect at a very real level.
We think personality is important as well as professionalism. It doesn’t mean that we’re all touchy-feely and marshmallow-soft – we have a firm core of business and accountancy experience and we don’t mess around – but it does mean we’ll be there for you and your business, and we aim to be down to earth, direct and approachable in all our work.
So, by way of an introduction to Direct Business and Accountancy, this is a little bit about us, and about the business and accountancy services we offer to businesses in Burnley and across Lancashire.
Paula and Julie
Direct Business and Accountancy, (DBA) is two dedicated, professional women, Paula Mulligan and Julie Hamer.
Both would readily admit that they didn’t originally seek out accountancy as a career, but did discover they had a natural aptitude for it.
Paula had an early experience of working in retail that sparked a love of finances and an ability with numbers. Julie’s first accountancy job was doing the family business’s accounts after leaving college.
Julie took time out from her early accounting career to work with disadvantaged teenagers before moving into teaching for several years. Then she came back to accounting, motivated to work where she could see tangible results from problem-solving, where there were clean-cut conclusions when it came to helping people.
Paula’s own route to accountancy was a combination of perseverance and opportunity. She applied to a local business that assembled and sold hi-fi systems and went from shop floor to accounts. Thereafter she worked at different businesses in accounts departments, in diverse sectors such as manufacturing and hospitality. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Both Paula and Julie enjoy the outdoors – Julie has discovered the joys of camping, while Paula hikes, runs and is a keen traveller.
Each has a busy home and leisure life and both would say that they do what they do because they really love doing it – helping others and resolving problems gives them a clear sense of achievement.
Their combined experience in the world outside accountancy gives them a valuable, personal perspective on the varied situations they’re called to apply their expertise to, and has helped them become form a dynamic, engaging, people-focused professional partnership.
What We Do at DBA
No business exists in isolation. We’re all dependent, to a degree, on the actions of others, and we can all be victims of circumstance, sometimes.
When we work with our different clients, we’re able to provide something more than professional accountancy support. Each business has its own dynamic, its own issues and challenges.
Some people require more help than others. If you need us to process your paperwork within an accountancy system you already have, we’re happy to do that.
But if you need an accountancy system put in place, we can also provide that service, ensuring that you have something that will be the right match.
Or, if it suits you best, we can take your paperwork and process it through our own system for you.
Whichever way is appropriate, we’ll ensure you have the accountancy service you require, that works best for your business.
This paperwork typically consists of purchase ledger, sales ledger, nominal ledger, maintaining a fixed asset register, alongside bank reconciliations and valuating stock.
We can sort out your year end accounts – we know how stressful they can be, but whatever kind of business you are, from a sole trader to a limited company or non-profit, we’ll make sure you’re done and dusted, and fully compliant.
We specialise in tax and VAT returns, making sure you’re clear about what you owe and when, compiling your returns and sending them to HMRC on your behalf.
However, we know that for many businesses this is only part of the story.
Bespoke Business Support
When it’s your business you can be up close to it, with an eye on the detail when it comes to your own services and products, but there’s other stuff that gets in the way, that takes you out of your comfort zone.
We’ve seen and experienced enough of the world of work to know that running a business is complicated, and that support with getting a clear overview of where you’re going, or want to go, is a valuable thing.
We can look at your management accounts to help you make the decisions that will best benefit you, whether as a one-off piece of work or on a regular basis – different businesses require different levels of support.
If you need help with forecasting and planning your budget, we’re up for that, because this sort of clarity is essential for your business to grow and thrive.
For some firms, making the leap to employing more people comes with a fresh set of tasks and challenges. We’ll provide professional payroll services, to keep you up to speed with changes in the law, and taking care of the crucial stuff such as auto-enrolment and other payroll-related must-dos.
We cover comprehensive business advice and support alongside the accountancy service essentials. Whether you’re short on time, or experience, when it comes to these things, we’ll be there to give you the help you need.
