So, by way of an introduction to Direct Business and Accountancy, this is a little bit about us, and about the business and accountancy services we offer to businesses in Burnley and across Lancashire.
Paula and Julie
Direct Business and Accountancy, (DBA) is two dedicated, professional women, Paula Mulligan and Julie Hamer.
Both would readily admit that they didn’t originally seek out accountancy as a career, but did discover they had a natural aptitude for it.
Paula had an early experience of working in retail that sparked a love of finances and an ability with numbers. Julie’s first accountancy job was doing the family business’s accounts after leaving college.
Julie took time out from her early accounting career to work with disadvantaged teenagers before moving into teaching for several years. Then she came back to accounting, motivated to work where she could see tangible results from problem-solving, where there were clean-cut conclusions when it came to helping people.
Paula’s own route to accountancy was a combination of perseverance and opportunity. She applied to a local business that assembled and sold hi-fi systems and went from shop floor to accounts. Thereafter she worked at different businesses in accounts departments, in diverse sectors such as manufacturing and hospitality. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.
Both Paula and Julie enjoy the outdoors – Julie has discovered the joys of camping, while Paula hikes, runs and is a keen traveller.
Each has a busy home and leisure life and both would say that they do what they do because they really love doing it – helping others and resolving problems gives them a clear sense of achievement.
Their combined experience in the world outside accountancy gives them a valuable, personal perspective on the varied situations they’re called to apply their expertise to, and has helped them become form a dynamic, engaging, people-focused professional partnership.
