Like Paula, Julie never set out to work in finance. As a college leaver she was unsure what path to take so starting doing the accounts within her parents business, which she found enjoyable and decided to make a career out of.
A Varied Career
Another finance job followed and then a move to the UCI Cinemas head office where she stayed in the finance department for a couple of years. This is where things took an unexpected turn and Julie found her career taking a redirection…
Julie spent her weekends volunteering with a local charity who worked with young people leaving the care system. As Julie felt passionate about this work, she accepted a paid role in a children’s residential home which opened in Bury. The nature of the job could be upsetting at times and, although Julie loved her job, she decided to move to a comprehensive school after five years.
Teaching is what Julie spent the next eight years doing, which she enjoyed – the school holidays were a nice bonus too!
Feeling that she had ‘given something back’, Julie looked for her next career move. She spent the next year selling houses for a large newbuild company. This line of work didn’t prove to be very satisfying as Julie is keen on feeling a sense of accomplishment and, in her own words, she found she felt she was trying to solve other peoples ‘first world problems’ with no specific sense of achievement.
This prompted a move back into the world of accountancy. This suited Julie, as she likes the routine of solving issues, coming to conclusions and producing things! She goes home everyday with a real sense of satisfaction!
Julie lives together with her husband and eight-year-old son. They enjoy spending family time together – especially at the cinema, and have recently got into camping (Julie still remains a little nervous about the camping though!) they also share their home with cats Rocket and Ralphy!
As a food lover, Julie enjoys nothing more than a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and something spicy, such as fajitas or Thai green curry.
Something surprising about Julie is her taste in music, she likes a wide range of music but as she says – she definitely breaks Radio One’s typical demographic! Particular favourites are Stormsy, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and George the Poet.
